More Crossrail delays as costs increase again

FURTHER delays along with additional and substantial cost rises have been confirmed by Crossrail, the project to connect east and west London with a new rail line. Delays in the completion of the construction phase of the Elizabeth Line are as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, which has now pushed the opening of the section under central London to connect Paddington with Shenfield and Abbey Wood back to the first half of 2022. Costs to complete the project could be £1.1 billion above the financing package agreed back in December 2018. Delays related to reduced productivity for the shafts and portals stemming from sites being closed and reopened with fewer workers under social distancing rules.
