From St David's, Exeter, to Queen Street Station the gradient is 1 -in-37.This is exceeded in severity by two miles at 1-in-36 on the Ilfracombe branch; while there are several instances of 1 -in-37and even 1-in-33 on various lines. Thus, the Oldham incline of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway is at 1 -in-27 for about three-quarters of a mile; while the North Pembrokeshire branch of the Great Western Railway also includes this gradient. Furthermore, on the North British Railway the Commonhead incline is at 1-in-23 for 440 yards, 1-in-25 for 380 yards, 1-in-27 for 550 yards, and 1-in-31 for 650 yards; while the Causeway end incline includes 1 -in-23 for 860 yards. On the goods line to Kirkcaldy Harbour on the same railway, the gradient is 1 -in-20 for 600 yards. There are also steeper inclines worked or assisted by cable haulage.
