ENCOMPASSING wildly contrasting landscapes from the bleak uplands of the Yorkshire Dales to the textile mills of Leeds and Bradford and the coal and steel industries of Sheffield, the old West Riding of Yorkshire once covered almost the entire width of northern England. From a railway point of view it offered far more than the dense networks of lines around the major industrial centres, boasting some superbly scenic main lines through the Pennines, bucolic branches and a wide variety of fascinating industrial lines.
