IT IS the Christmas of 1954 on the West Bridge branch of the old Leicester & Swannington Railway, and the mysterious murder of the crossing keeper at the fictional Black Spinney Crossing, near Desford, has Inspector Charles Vignoles of the British Railways Detective Department perplexed. Evidence points to an aggravated burglary gone wrong, but all is not as it first appears as Vignoles and his trusty Detective Sergeant, John Trinder, unravel a complex web of lies and deceit in order to solve a far greater mystery. Robbery, family betrayal, a quiet rural branch line and bloody murder combine to provide Vignoles' team their most challenging investigation to date.
