More and more automatic fire fighting systems have been used for more than a decade in railway vehicles. Components available on the market are largely taken from stationary fire protection systems. The requirements to such systems for the railway rolling stock market are of various nature. In terms of environmental requirements and protection targets they are considerably more demanding than those for stationary applications. It is therefore of utmost importance to analyse the requirements individually in order to guarantee a high level of reliability and a corresponding availability of the automatic fire protection system as well as to reduce at the same time the life cycle costs to an acceptable level.%Seit über einem Jahrzehnt steigt der Einsatz von Brandschutztechnik in Schienenfahrzeugen zunehmend. Zu Beginn wurde bei dem Einsatz von automatischen Brandschutzanlagen für die Brandmeldesysteme auf den Stand der Technik aus der stationären Industrie zurückgegriffen. Für bahnspezifische Anlagen gelten jedoch zusätzliche Anforderungen, die es nicht erlauben, jede Brandschutzanlage aus der stationären Umgebung in einem Schienenfahrzeug einzusetzen. Die EN 54 Normenreihe beschreibt Anforderungen, Prüfverfahren und Leistungsmerkmale für allgemeine Brandschutzsysteme.
