Seldom do we come across instances of murderous racism that leave a legacy quite like the case of Stephen Lawrence. The circumstances surrounding the murder are well known, as are the failings of the subsequent police investigation and the recommendations of the public inquiry led by Sir William Macpherson. However, and despite the valuable contributions offered in texts such as Rowe (2007) Policing beyond Macpherson and various Home Office studies, less is known about the impact of the Lawrence Inquiry upon police practice and service delivery. The publication of this text, which marks the tenth anniversary of the publication of the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry, therefore offers readers a timely opportunity to reflect upon actual levels of progress post-Macpherson.
