The Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE) remains one of the most significant developments in modem policing, though its history has been one of constant change. Encompassing many of the core aspects of everyday operational policing, including the power to stop and search, the detention, treatment and questioning of persons by police and identification, PACE and its associated Codes of Practice still represent the dominant legal framework within which policing should be conducted across England and Wales. Not only does PACE engage with the everyday practicalities of policing, it also connects to wider questions concerning the relationship between authorities charged with investigating crime and the rights of citizens who may be subject to such investigations.
