OPP Brings Fresh Perspective to Traffic Safety Social Media

With 72,000 kilometers (45,000 miles) of paved roads to police from border to border, traffic safety is a core function of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in the delivery of its public safety mandate. One of the attributes that has earned the OPP its international reputation as a leader in traffic safety is its dedication and commitment to finding new, innovative ways to reduce the number of lives lost on Ontario roads. The OPP has seen a dramatic reduction in road deaths since implementing its award-winning Provincial Traffic Safety Program (PTSP) in 2007. From 2005 to 2007, the number of motor vehicle collisions within OPP's jurisdiction associated with impaired driving and other high-risk behaviors was approximately 450. Since 2008 (the first full year of the program), road deaths steadily declined, and over the last two years (2013-2014), the number fell below the 300 mark for the first time in more than 80 years.
