Germanischer Lloyd has launched a new 'Safe Return to Port' service, designed to assist designers, builders, and owners alike at an early stage of design in complying with coming SOLAS requirements. Class body GL says its new 'Safe Return to Port' service, which will be of particular interest to the cruiseship sector as ships press ever onwards to more remote destinations, presents a new tool 'to systematically verify and document the functionality of essential systems in case of a casualty'. New SOLAS requirements represent the first example of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) defining performance requirements for the functionality of essential systems on passenger ships under predefined casualty scenarios. The coming SOLAS requirements for 'Safe Return to Port' demand that the occurrence of defined flooding, as well as fire casualties, demonstrate the application of different and more risk-based methods compared to the prescriptive requirements of today.
