AAW version of FREMM enhances export potential

Europe's multi-national general-purpose frigate project, the Fregate Europeennes Multi-Missions (FREMM), has received a major boost as France announced orders for anti-air warfare (AAW) versions of the new design, which will help market the design abroad. The Franco-Italian programme launched in November 2002 is the largest in Europe and was originally to have cost EUR11 billion (US$15.6 billion) with a total of 27 ships divided between general-purpose/land attack and anti-submarine versions.
