China is playing a game of catch up when it comes to the world of green ship technology. Shipowners' demands these days are for lower fuel bills and China has been behind the curve compared to Asian rivals Korea and Japan in producing designs to meet this pent up need. However, this is changing. Wang Jinlian, general secretary of the China National Shipbuilding Industry Association (CANSI) stresses: "We need to research and develop the technology which will be compliant with new regulations in the next five to 10 years or even longer.
