February 2017 saw Germany's Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen confirm that the ministry had decided to acquire a total of six MKS-180 multi-role frigates in a single batch, rather than ordering an initial four ships whilst deferring a decision on the acquisition of two of those vessels until 2030. A decision to acquire four MKS-180 frigates was first announced in October 2016. At the time, the decision on the final pair of vessels was not expected until a later date, but the ministers spokesperson said: "The need is there. The minister has decided to buy all six MKS-180 ships." The vessels will be delivered from 2023 onwards.
