Martin Renilson and Teresa Hatch discuss some interesting new work carried out in Australia on a well-known shallow-water phenonemon. The phenomenon of a decrease in under-keel clearance which occurs when a vessel is travelling at speed in shallow water is very well known by mariners and naval architects, and has been the subject of much research over recent years (References 1 - 26). A number of different empirical methods for predicting this decrease, known as squat, have been developed, often based on the pioneering work of Tuck (1966).
