Norwegian shipowner Saga Pure (formerly Saga Tankers) has acquired a 33% stake in liquid hydrogen storage company IC Technologies (ICT), which recently received class approval for a new onboard storage system for liquid hydrogen or LNG. ICT's system consists of two stainless steel membranes and two vacuum insulation layers. The primary layer utilises a patented membrane technology which cools the cargo with helium circulation, while the vacuum insulation of the tank prevents heat loss, enables detection and handling of hydrogen leakage from the tank, as well as any leakage into the secondary insulation space. Classification society DNV recently issued Approval in Principle (AiP) to the new system for liquid hydrogen membrane containment, a significant development for the technology. DNV evaluated the system arrangement, safety systems, and structural function of the insulation panels and the membranes for compliance with IMO's Interim Recommendation for Carriage of Liquefied Hydrogen in Bulk, as well as the IGC Code, and the DNV Rules for the Classification of Ships Pt.5 Ch.7. Because there are still no implemented IMO regulations membrane systems will require the individual acceptance of flag state administrations.
