Process for operating a gas generating system for preparing almost pure hydrogen comprises dividing hydrogen-containing gas into almost pure hydrogen and a residual gas using a hydrogen separation module (1). The module is heated using the waste gases from the catalytic combustion of the residual gas in a catalytic burner (4) and using a transport medium. The temperature of the module is regulated by controlling the temperature of the burner and/or by adding water to the transport medium before being added to a heat exchanger (8). An Independent claim is also included for a hydrogen separation module comprising a housing (7) formed as a heat exchanger through which the waste gases from the burner flow.
