The development of digital tools and smart technology has been recognised for the improvements it delivers in the operation and management of complex systems and assets. Many navies have also acknowledged the advantage that digital technologies can provide in managing and maintaining their fleets, supporting safe operations, improving availability and mission readiness and reducing operating costs.Current maintenance practices for many assets are based on preventive recommendations driven by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). These are mostly determined based upon testing during manufacturing and have time-based preventive maintenance schedules. This means equipment is operated until the scheduled maintenance intervals and then replaced in case of failure.
