Statistics indicate that water leakage through hatchcovers is the main cause of cargo damage, and that weathertightness becomes more of an issue once a ship has been in service for five years. Accordingly, the topic of hatchcover system integrity has far-reaching implications for transportation service quality, cargo claims and costs, owner, charterer, and shipper competitiveness, and ultimately also safety.
