Prospects for the introduction of ships specially designed to carry pressurised natural gas (PNG) in multiple vertical pipes (pressure vessels) is discussed here by classification society Det Norske Veritas, which is working in association with the leading Norwegian tanker operator Knutsen OAS, and Europipe GmbH. To a large extent, natural gas resources are located far from their markets. Some 30% of the discovered gas is considered stranded. Stranded is defined as reservoir gas fractions that prevent the development or optimal production from an oil or gas field due to their distance from the market or existing pipeline infrastructure, lack of transport economy or lack of conversion technology. To meet the future demand for natural gas, cost-effective solutions for transporting natural gas to the consumers must be developed.
