Shipyard Blohm & Voss and its partners Luerssen Werft and Nordseewerke GmbH have begun construction of the first K130 class corvette for the German Navy. Construction of the first of the new class is taking place in Hall Number 3 at Blohm & Voss. The K130 programme is of great importance for the German naval shipbuilding industry and the companies that provide items of equipment and components for warships, and the K130 is an innovative design in a number of respects, having an integrated bridge, high level of automation throughout, and a smaller crew than would have been possible without such a high level of automation. Construction of a total of five class K130 corvettes was approved by the Bundestag's budget committee in December of 2001, with the construction programme divided between the participating yards.
