Grant awarded for tidal energy turbine project

A dti Grant of £3.85 million was recently awarded to Marine Current Turbines Ltd (MCT) towards its £8 million 'SeaGen' tidal energy turbine project, a new device that has the potential to generate 1MW of electricity from marine currents. The company aims to have the SeaGen turbine installed in UK waters and connected to the National Grid during 2006. It will be three times as powerful as MCT's existing 'Seaflow' turbine, which was the world's first offshore tidal turbine. The 300kW turbine was installed off Lynmouth, Devon, in May 2003.
