ONR unveils advanced electric-ship demonstrator

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) in the US has unveiled an advanced, electric ship demonstrator, Sea Jet, which it plans to use to investigate electric propulsion and the performance advantages of a new type of underwater discharge waterjet developed by Rolls-Royce, the AWJ-21. The Sea Jet Advanced Electric Ship Demonstrator (AESD) was formally christened on August 24th at the Acoustic Research Detachment of the Naval Surface Warfare Centre, Carderock Division, in Bayview, Idaho. Chief of Naval Research Rear Admiral Jay M Cohen delivered the principle address at the christening. The 133ft (40.53m) vessel will serve as a model representing a destroyer-size surface ship and will be tested on Lake Pend Oreille, Idaho, where it will be used to test and demonstrate several technologies, including the AWJ-21 underwater discharge waterjet, which has been under development at Rolls-Royce Naval Marine for several years.
