Russia seeks pacts with West on ships

The Russian naval defence industry is seeking alliances with its Western counterpart and is already working with Italy on a submarine project. Formal negotiations have been underway with Germany since July 2004 with a naval armament working group established under Major General Sergei Ignatov of the Federal Service for Armament Technology Co-operation and Rear Admiral Juergen Kratzmann of the German Armament Directorate. According to Naval Spyglass, the last meeting was in Moscow in February and the next one will be in Hamburg during the summer. The meetings aim to identify potential areas of industrial cooperation as well as arrangements for collaboration and exchanging information.
