The Multi-Role Vessel (MRV) which is being built for the New Zealand Ministry of Defence by Merwede Shipyard in the Netherlands on behalf of programme prime contractor Tenix Defence was launched in mid-February at the Dutch yard, commenced trials in early July, and sailed for Australia, where she will be fitted with the remainder of her mission systems. The MRV is the first (and largest) of a total of seven ships, including two Offshore Patrol Vessels and four Inshore Patrol Vessels, being built by Tenix Defence under the NZ$500 million Project Protector contract. The launch of the MRV was on schedule, 18 months after contract award.
