A hybrid design for Arctic transportation has been created by a collaboration between Wartsila and Aker Arctic, comprising the benefits of both the double acting ship (DAS) concept and the pusher-barge concept, entitled the double acting pusher puller barge system (DAPPB).rnAker Arctic's DAS concept is based on the principle of a ship operating stern first in ice, a compromise between good icebreaking capability, water inflow to the propellers, and course stability. However, the diesel-electric propulsion arrangement is relatively expensive compared with a conventional arrangement, and the electrical transmission losses are high.
