Congress agrees to cut carrier force

Congress in the US has 'bitten the bullet' and permitted a temporary cut in the US Navy carrier force to 11 hulls. Under pressure from Florida-based politicians, Congress had tried to keep the conventionally-powered aircraft carrier USS John F Kennedy (CV 67) in service. The US Navy, which wanted to save US$200 million by retiring the 38-year-old ship, had fought a strong rearguard action, arguing there were safety issues with its arrester gear.
