Mapping out the future

After two years in operation, the LGA is now establishing a strategy for its longer-term future. Doug Jones looks at the challenges that lie ahead and the work of its Futures Team. Good policy planning and lobbying by local government in the run-up to the 1997 general election led to prospective legislation, to the replacement of compulsory competitive tendering with best value and to the innovative 'New Commitment' pathfinder projects.
