Reducing Climate Vulnerability at Army Installation

A recently deployed web-based Climate Assessment Tool aims to assist installation leaders and personnel with preparing for climate impacts such as increased flooding, water shortages, wildfire, and thawing permafrost. The tool was developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as part of an overall Army strategy to bolster installation climate resilience. The Climate Assessment Tool will support the Army's priorities of readiness and modernization by preserving the mission readiness of Army installations as they perform their critical role as global power projection platforms. Installations must also modernize at pace with weapon systems, organizations, and doctrine to be resilient to man-made and natural threats, including climate change. Development or the Climate Assessment Tool began in response to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2018, which included a Sense of Congress providing that "military installations must be able to effectively prepare to mitigate climate damage in their master planning and infrastructure planning and design, so that they might best consider the weather and natural resources most pertinent to them." The Army introduced the new tool to Fort Bragg's Directorate of Public Works in February 2020 and to Fort Hood in March 2020. Army-wide access will be available in early 2021.
