The Pentagon-the U.S.'s largest domestic office building which, at 6.2 million sq ft, rivals a 6,000-room hotel/casino-is being renovated by a unique and ambitious government-industry collaboration that includes a wide-ranging team of planners and designers. Not only are its five "wedges" of office space designed to be adaptable, maintainable and sustainable, plans call for the project to be fast-tracked and come in under budget. Finishing touches to Wedge 1 were just about done when disaster struck on 9/11. Blast-resistant windows and steel supports that had been added earlier proved their worth, and undoubtedly saved many lives. Immediately after the attack, the original planners were rehired to rebuild this wedge, and an extensive design team was assembled to continue the ongoing renovation of Wedges 2 through 5. The team included architectural firms Shalom Baranes Studios and HDR Architecture Inc., general contractor Hensel Phelps Construction Co., electrical contractor M.C. Dean and mechanical contractor Southland Industries. Their planners, designers, building contractors and engineers developed a master plan, called the Universal Space Plan. It will guide all current and future renovations and upgrades for tenants.
