Fort Ord is located on the Monterey Peninsula in California. In its "hey-day," Fort Ord covered more than 28,000 acres and was used primarily as an infantry training center. The base was closed in 1994 as a result of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission. It contains an extensive amount of munitions and explosives of concern (MEC) and is on the National Priorities List (NPL) of hazardous waste sites.
