Sustainability In The U.s. Coast Guard

Sustainable practices enhance the U.S. Coast Guard's ability to meet the strategic objectives of its missions through the increased efficiency, resiliency and durability of its assets. The Coast Guard uses sustainable practices in both new and existing shore infrastructure through use of integrated design. In 2003, the Coast Guard joined the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to promote sustainable development of its shore infrastructure through certifications, training and discussions. In 2007, the Commandant of the Coast Guard re-emphasized the importance of sustainable development with the release of his Environmental Stewardship Commitment, which directed that 25 percent of all new construction projects meet the USGBC's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards by 2010.
