Greenup Dam and Bridge

Editor's Note: The following article "Greenup Dam and Bridge: A Masterpiece of Agency Co-Operation" was written by Joseph R. Turner, RE., and William F. Hawley, P.E., both of USACE Huntington District, and first published in the May-June 1986 issue of The Military Engineer. The authors detail how the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Federal Highway Administration, Commonwealth of Kentucky and State of Ohio in the mid-1980s worked together and with industry partners to design, fund and construct a two-lane highway bridge across the Ohio River using the existing Greenup Dam as a support structure for the road. As the nation today faces the considerable challenge of bringing our infrastructure to a safe and reliable level (an estimated $3.6 trillion investment is needed by 2020 alone), this highway across the Ohio is a sound example that success only will be possible through the collective efforts and shared responsibility of all United States governments-federal, state and local-as well as business and citizens alike.
