Primary energy consumption in the United States in 2016 totaled 97.4-quadrillion-Btu, a slight increase from the 2015 level. The consumption of coal decreased by 9 percent, nearly offsetting increases in the consumption of renewables, petroleum, natural gas, and nuclear fuel.
