With the United States now pledged to re-enter the Paris Climate Accord, a new level of global alignment spanning energy and sustainability goals has emerged. For instance, in January a total of 61 large corporations agreed to sign on to a framework, in partnership with the World Economic Forum, for environmental, social, and governance standards. This commitment converts previously stated intentions to embrace susiainabilily into actionable metrics. Coordinated international planning for a global net zero emission energy future is underway as well, and the United Stales is involved with the process now. Also last year, for the first time, the European Union reported consuming more electricity from renewable sources than fossil fuels. 'though COVID-19 has been recognized as an outsized factor in reduced energy consumption during 2020, these trends are expected to continue. Likewise, the United Slates anticipates contributions of renewables for energy generation to outpace growth in natural vas in the years ahead, with sharp declines in coal expected.
