In early June 2004,I was notified that the 7th Naval Construction Regiment (NCR) was being deployed to Iraq. We would form the core of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force Engineer Group (MEG), relieving the 22nd Naval Construction Regiment under the command of Capt. Mark Handley, CEC, USN. Other units included Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 4, NMCB 23, and U.S. Army engineers from the 120th Engineer Battalion.
