Editor's Note: The following article, "American Monorail Project" by Cdr. Harald Omsted, CEC, USNR, was first published in the May-June 1950 issue of The Military Engineer. The article looks at a proposed monorail concept that was being studied for urban areas of the country. Although it was never built, demand for railway transportation systems has endured. Today, construction is underway for the California High-Speed Rail, which will shuttle passengers at more than 200-mph and eventually extend from Sacramento to San Diego, totaling 800-mi with up to 24 stations (see page 54).
