Pilots are full of surprises. I often found that the inhabitant of the uniform sitting next to me on the flight deck possessed one or more of a bewildering array of qualifications and skills, none of which had any bearing on the job in hand. During my career it has been my privilege to fly with dentists, farmers, butchers, sail-makers, sanitary engineers, politicians, magistrates, council planning officers and Antiques Road Show experts, to name but a few. In fact, I seldom needed to venture beyond the cockpit door when seeking professional advice on virtually any topic.
