The new year started much as the old one ended; bleak, cold and miserable. And the weather was awful as well! The demise of Globespan, through no apparent fault of its own, has exacerbated an already poor outlook for pilots in 2010, and the start of a new 'pay-rnto-fly' placement scheme with one of our biggest airlines doesn't help at all. Just what lengths will some pilots go to in order to get that first job or to keep the one they already hold, perhaps tenuously? In this edition's lead article, Dr Simon Bennett takes a look at the crash of the Colgan Air Q800 whilst on approach to Buffalo, NY, last year, in which 50 people died. As in most accidents, it was caused by a fatal chain of events, any one of which, had it been broken, would have prevented the accident.
