Prospecting for oil has at least one similarity to carrying passengers by air for hire and reward. In both cases the basic activity is quite dangerous, but with care, cash and concentration both can be made safe; in the case of aviation - at present - remarkably safe. Allegedly, BP expanded substantially in the 90s and into the new century by concentrating on the big oil reservoirs -such as the Gulf of Mexico -while the accountants running it massively cut costs.
