As part of The Log's desire to bringyou some slightly different holiday ideas, in the August 2012 edition I wrote about the Galapagos Islands. Immediately prior to that visit, my wife and I spent two weeks touring Peru by coach and train, culminating in a visit to the ancient Inca site at Machu Picchu. We decided to spend a few days in Florida beforehand so that we were time-adjusted to Peru and able to 'hit the ground running'.Thus, we flew into Lima on the day before the tour started rather than arrive after an overnight flight from Europe. We spent 14 days visiting some spectacular sites and as about 10 of these days were at an elevation of 7,500 feet and above (the highest point we reached was on the road to Puno at 16,108 feet), it wasn't only the views which were breathtaking. Most of the time the rarefied air wasn't a problem, but every hotel has oxygen cylinders on each floor... just in case.
