BILLY'S STORY

Life as I knew it changed dramatically on the night of ist October 2007, whilst serving as a Royal Marine in Afghanistan. My team and I were involved in a firefight with the enemy, which resulted in me sustaining three gunshot wounds to my lower body. During the ensuing chaos, I lost a huge amount of blood (approximately 10 times my normal body volume with transfusions) and it was due to the skill and bravery of my colleagues that I survived the trip back to Camp Bastion. Once stable enough I was flown back to the UK, in a coma. I woke up to find I had sustained three life-threatening and various life-limiting injuries, (left below-knee amputation, broken and fragmented right tibia and fibula, open abdominal trauma, multiple fractures to left acetabulum and pelvis and various deep tissue wounds).
