Born in Bridport, Dorset, Nigel Humphries showed an interest in flying from an early age, gaining his PPL at Hum Airport with sponsorship from the RAF. He completed his CPL/IR in December 1974, at the College of Air Training, Hamble, but - because of the downturn in aviation - he did not join British Airways until two years later. After all-too-few enjoyable years on the Trident, a further downturn resulted in the offer of redeployment on ground jobs or voluntary redundancy, with Nigel opting for the latter. This started him on a fascinatingly varied career: night mail runs in Britten-Norman Islanders light aircraft (then, later on, DHC-8); transatlantic delivery flights; writing an AOC for float plane air-taxi work; famine relief for Save the Children in Ethiopia and other agencies in Sudan; 747-300 with Cathay Pacific in Hong Kong; back to the UK to become a training captain with Brymon Airways; and, finally, helping to set up Air Southwest as its first chief pilot.
