San Francisco: the city in which Tony Bennett left his heart. It's compact as US cities go and, looking at a map, one might be duped into thinking it is quite easy to explore on foot. However, it is worth bearing in mind the not-so-frequently recounted next line of the song. This is a city of some serious gradients and "high on a hill it calls to me" is about right as a summary of the topography - no, hang on, make that high on several hills. I can think of no better venue if you were, say, in need of serious hill training for a marathon or something of that ilk - although just imagining going upwards at anything other than a snail's pace had me out of breath.
