摘要

The fable of The Emperor's New Clothes, by Hans Christian Andersen, concerns two tailors who convince a vain emperor that they can weave him a suit of clothes so fine that it is only visible to people of superior taste and intelligence. Buying into the con, the emperor can hardly admit that he is unable to see the clothes, and parades in front of his subjects completely naked. His subjects, in turn, cannot admit they lack the taste and intelligence required to see the clothes. So they perpetuate the lie - feigning admiration of the fine cut and colours - until a child, naive in the ways of the world, shouts "but he isn't wearing anything at all", and the people realise they have all been deceived.
