Reaching for the Light

The lighting scheme for this new development included all the external courtyard areas, the building facades and the roadway lighting - and the brief, working on a relatively restricted budget, was to create a safe, pleasant environment for both residents and the public. The main ambient lighting for the courtyard area is provided by a series of Louis Poulsen Kipp lanterns on 5-metre columns, fitted with warm 3000K 70W ceramic metal halide lamps. The chosen fittings offer broad horizontal distribution with minimal upward light spill, to avoid light trespass into surrounding windows. The same lantern was specified for internal roadway areas, but with an asymmetric distribution.
