The ever increasing cost of energy is a real issue today. One engineer told me that six years ago he was paying 3.8p per kWh and he is currently paying 8.5p per kWh. Another authority, currently negotiating its energy contract, could be looking at 11.5p per kWh. Responses have variedrn- some authorities, most notably Essex CC, have begun switching off their street lighting. In my view, and the ILE's, no matter what the cost, switching off street lighting is not an option. Elsewhere, other authorities are busy replacing 35W SOX lanterns with 70W SON like for likern- something that will double their energy costs, but not necessarily their budget.
