The Barajas International Airport in Madrid, Spain, required clarity and legibility to accommodate the huge volume of passengers and complex functions of the space. The artificial lighting design concept enhances the architect's clear and intelligent planning diagram, ensuring logical and intuitive wayfinding processes, in order to make the passenger experience as seamless and unspoiled as possible. The lighting design team felt that simplicity was the key lighting aspect, with the scale and complexity of the building dictatingrna lighting composition of few components, while still enhancing the architecture.rnThe lighting budget didn't allow for conventional downlighting design and illumination of architectural detail. Additionally, the incredible scale of the project, with each concourse some 1200 metres long, demanded a lighting solution that would not overpower the architecture.
