The Luminance Intensity and Distribution of Exterior LED Screens

In this abridged version of his dissertation for the Bartlett School of Architecture MSc in Light & Lighting, Kasper Hammer Nielsen of Ramboll Denmark looks in detail at the brightness levels of the latest LED information screens used in outdoor urban environments. His findings raise some interesting, and disturbing, questions.rnThe research looked at the luminous intensity and distribution of the modern LED screen technology increasingly used for promotional lighting in urban environments (Figure 1). Such screen technology plays an important role in helping to create an animated urban fabric and it has great future potential - but this new 'layer' of architectural lighting, which has suddenly appeared in city centres across thernworld, needs to be explored in greater detail, to provide suitable guidelines and recommendations for its use.
