As an example of how innovative lighting design can be used to help the elderly, this interesting lighting system for door frames in old peoples' rooms was developed by Mariana Figueiro at the Lighting Research Center, Renssellaer Polytechnic Institute, USA. It uses low brightness LEDs hidden behind the door frame to give horizontal and vertical cues to the door's location. The lights are turned on by a pressure pad under the carpet or rug by the bed, as the old person makes their way to the toilet in the night. The same researcher has also come up with concepts for a 24-hour lighting system for the elderly.
