US sees boost for LED street lighting

Dramatically falling costs and improvements in efficiency are driving increased sales of LEDs for street lighting in the US, says a new report,Smart Street Lighting, from Pike Research, part of Navigant's Energy Practice. Costs have fallen by as much as 50 per cent over the past two years, according to the report, which predicts that by 2015, LEDs will become the second-leading source for street lights in terms of sales, behind only highpressure sodium lamps. There is also a drive towards centrally managed street lighting, though nearly all smart street lighting projects are currently still in a pilot phase, according to the report.
