The doughnut-shaped Diamond Light Source, the UK's national synchrotron science facility, is one of the most advanced scientific facilities in the world. Half a kilometre in circumference (the LHC at CERN is 27km), the huge particle accelerator is designed to produce very intense beams of X-rays, infrared and ultraviolet light. It works like a giant microscope, harnessing the power of electrons by accelerating them to near light speeds - the result is that they give off a light 10bn times brighter than the sun.
